ABOUT POKÉFIELD
You don’t search the Pokédex. You call into it.
PokéField is a playable visual Pokédex built around one persistent field of Pokémon. Instead of opening a list of search results, you send a CALL into the field. Every Pokémon that matches the call answers from wherever it already is.
Call a type. Call a move. Call a generation, a stat, or a specific Pokémon. The responders light up inside the larger population while the rest of the field stays visible as context. Call again and the next call is made only to the Pokémon that answered before.
When the group is the one you want, press FOCUS. The responders become your new active field, expand to fill the available space, and can be called again. The result is a recursive way to explore the Pokédex by meaning rather than by pages.
CALL
A CALL asks the current field a question without immediately removing everything else.
- Call Water and Water-type Pokémon answer.
- Call Earthquake and Pokémon that match that move call answer.
- Call a Pokémon and that Pokémon answers as an object inside the field.
- Call again to refine the responders without leaving the field.
FOCUS
FOCUS turns the current responders into the next field.
- Non-responders recede.
- The responding Pokémon move forward and rescale.
- The focused group becomes the new scope for the next CALL.
- You can move back through previous scopes without starting over.
The field is the interface
PokéField does not treat the Pokédex as a stack of cards, a conventional filter panel, or a chatbot transcript. The Pokémon population stays on screen and the answer appears inside that population.
- Presence: who answers the current CALL.
- Scope: which responders become the next field after FOCUS.
- Position: where Pokémon sit inside the field.
- Scale: how strongly individual Pokémon can be seen as the scope narrows.
- Shape and order: the same group can be reorganized spatially without turning into a separate results page.
A visual query language
The core interaction is deliberately simple:
CHOOSE → CALL → CALL → FOCUS → CALL → FOCUS
Complex filtering emerges from repeated simple actions. The interface can therefore stay tap-first and visual instead of requiring a long textual query.
Pokémon stay objects
A Pokémon is not reduced to a database row. Its sprite remains an object in the field. Types, moves, generations and stats act as properties you can call against that population. This makes the Pokédex feel less like a catalogue and more like something you can operate.
Why PokéField exists
The familiar Pokédex answers a question by taking you somewhere else: a page, a list, a card, a search result. PokéField explores a different idea: keep the population visible and let the question change what becomes present inside it.
That is the central experiment behind PokéField: what if the Pokédex itself were a living visual field, and meaning could be sent directly into it?
